last night was Midwest Ska-Fest. Deals gone bad bored me a bit, Lord Mike's Dirty Calypsonians were rather good and Mustard Plug proved to still be amazing. last three songs: beer(song), mr. smiley and we're gonna take on the world. awesome. plus i got to see some really important people.
a few days ago I went on a book shopping spree, thanks to gift cards from christmas. the following five books are listed alphabetically by author: the last night of the earth poetry by charles bukowski, the adventures of kavalier and clay by michael chabon, how we are hungry by dave eggers, the little friend by donna tartt and player piano by kurt vonnegut.
i still don't know what i'm going to do for new year's eve
i changed a tire today. it was awesome.

the concert last night was rather good. after a slow start, calexico kicked into a groove. red red meat was a complete surprise. iron and wine played a very nice set, and the iron and wine/calexico set proved to be really good as well.
during red red meat's set, tim rutili invited doug mccombs to join the band for a song, which extended my streak of concerts with members of tortoise to 3. mr. mccombs was barely audible, but his appearance made the concert that much better.
article wednesday, concert friday.
work

ps monday night football's john madden just asked his cohort "what color do you get when you mix yellow and red?".... he answered his own question with green.... wait, it gets worse.... he proceeded to show the camera his tie, explaining that he had spilled yellow mustard on his red tie, and now the stain was "lime green"... what a brilliant man

i'm about halfway done with my history final. then utter and glorious freedom until january. i know this is extremely similar to the previous post, but it'll be longer:
ive been thinking a lot. vague, yet i dont think it's necessary to elaborate. the script is coming along in leaps and bounds, to the detriment of my last pieces of homework for the quarter, and for that i am immensely happy. however, this damn essay still feels very powerful. and as much as I want to delete it, get up and leave to go roam around the city, I just can't. I refuse to let this be the case universally, if that makes any sort of vague sense. I'm really just partially outraged at myself for putting so much weight on this meaningless work in areas i will never care about or need ever again, as opposed to spending time with people and spending time on things that i care about.
it's even hypocritical that I'm using livejournal to convey this! does livejournal matter?! do people read this and care about it? do i care about people reading it? i must, if i'm
expressing myself in this particular way. is that a bad sign?!
is it a bad sign that my grammar and spelling and vocabulary haven't been close to par?

i better get back to this stupid paper or else the earth will implode.

ps this animal collective album isnt so great. i dont know why so many people like them so much(maybe its just the animal in their name) but i just don't

two essays and a test left.
then no school til' january. That sounds pretty amazing to me. Now, to make sure that I don't wind up sitting at home and reading through the entire break(well...that wouldn't be 100% bad). I'm looking forward to the classes I've chosen for next quarter.
Yes, this is a short post.

so, i was visiting a friend's dorm today and her suitemates were getting ready for a halloween party. One walks in and is asked "what are you going to dress up as?"
take a guess at the answer.
i dare you.

if you guessed anything but "pirate hooker" you are dead wrong. and the other suitemates couldve easily been called "ladybug hooker" and "firefighter hooker".

but anyways, the schedule for winter quarter looks pretty good. im not going to have class before nine forty or after 3:00. Mondays, wednesdays and fridays only have two hours of class each, tuesdays and thursdays have three hours each. german, introduction to mass communications, reading poetry and philosophical inquiry. not bad, not bad....

also, tmlmtbgb!

the following anecdote is not a word for word representation of reality, merely a hilarious half-transcript:
anj:"im starting a music zine, its gonna be awesome"
adam:"oh yeah, well i'll have to start one and crush yours in competition. ruthlessly"
anj:"oh yeah?"
adam:"and by that, i mean you're going to hire someone named ruth. i won't hire someone named ruth. and then i will beat you in direct competition. ruthlessly."

in other news, radio show day one went well, though the cd system refused to comply, and a few songs that shouldve been played weren't in the system. in the end, i consider it a success. we were told by a manager "you guys are pretty funny", which is encouraging enough. even a phone call from someone in boston!?
it has got to be at least 123 degrees in here, so a position in the alliance is undoubtedly mine.

mancur olson! mancur olson!
nettle!

i hate global warming
i am finished with that

i sent out the final copy today. i learned some shocking things, including the possibility that global warming escalates the magnitude of hurricane damage. which brings me to two very strange stories. one that could be considered black comedy by some, disgusting by others, and awful for more. the last one is a "adam had something to do with the hurricane".
ok so.
number 1 is a story told to me by a friend of a friend. this friend of a friend is named ryan and he goes to loyola and dorms there. on his floor, some people were having a raucous drunken party. in some unexplainable manner, someone broke the toilet in the bathroom down the hall from ryan. the water started shooting everywhere, soaking everything in the room. eventually, the water piled up so much that it began to drip through the floor. here's where it gets to be either supreme black comedy or terrible: the water began dripping into a bucket designated for hurricane relief. ryan's exact quote: "as if they needed any more water down there".

number 2 is kind of creepy. months ago, before news of the hurricane showed up at all, i spoke with a professor then at uic, named dr. torbjorn tornqvist(awesome name). i asked him all about global warming and its possible effects, like adverse weather conditions. then i hung up. when searching his name today, for credit in the story, i discovered two thingsL one he had moved from uic to tulane university in early august. tulane university is in NEW ORLEANS! second, the day he moved into his new apartment in new orleans was the day in which he had to flee it. and all because i had to start asking questions

an end of summer

at 3:30 today I have my first real class: quantitative reasoning. And if that doesn't sound menacing enough, it doesn't end until five o'clock.

and what did I do this morning, my last morning of freedom? I finished Mother Night by Vonnegut, and went downtown to buy books for my world history class tomorrow.

Chapter 3

i am excited for the following shows:
xiu xiu
tortoise
arcade fire(HOPE I CAN FIND A TICKET THATS NOT 70 DARN DOLLARS!)
deerhoof
black mountain
mustard plug
les claypool

i swear i'm not a complete jerk or a hipster.

speaking of hipsters, i had a run-in with one this evening. on my way home from practice, this hipster turned to me, and invited me to a "rockin' lingerie party". weird. he then proceeded to ask me tons of questions about my saxophone and such.
if you were wondering, no, i didnt go.

musically, things seem to be turning around from the despair(not really) i felt when those first reviews came in. im feeling much better, and there seem to be very promising prospects on the horizon

so, i thought the last pictures deserved to thrive in their full-sized glory(so i got tired of resizing, sue me)

i also thought quite a bit of hemingway, as strange as that may seem. that man lived in the epitome of duality his entire life, wilderness and society, masculine barbaracism in the wild and creativity and responsibility at home. he adventured and risked his life for his art. that is pretty impressive.

plus, i loved seeing the cornell, daumier and dali at the institute.

so, alls well and good then

on to chapter 2.

i'm excited about the play tonight and seeing some friends as well.

i'm excited about seeing kyle before he leaves on tuesday.

i'm excited about not being sad anymore. isnt it awesome when anger and such replace sadness (oh so much biting sarcasm, nearly every word. its funnier than it seems, trust me)

i finished on the road (again) last night and now have to start death in venice, even though i had two books lined up for after the kerouac. that means school's coming up soon
